Janet Lynn Award
for Sports
|
|
While attending Jr. High in Rockford, Janet Lynn became Rockford's
second Olympic athlete as she competed and finished 9th in Grenoble
France. She went on to become Rockford's first medalist as she won
the Bronze Medal in Sopporo, Japan. She was the US Women's National
Figure Skating Champion 5 times. In 1973, she became a professional
skater with the Ice Follies, which made her the highest paid female
athlete in the world. In 1994 she was inducted into the United States
Figure Skating Hall of Fame. Her pure joy of skating was admired by
all who had the privilege to see her perform. This award is presented
to a female athlete or to a woman who has promoted athletics.

2008 Winner |
Gerrie Gustafson
Nominated by OSF Saint Anthony
Gerrie has been a runner since 1981, her
dedication to the sport has not only been for her personal benefit, but
even more so for the benefit of the community. OSF’s Heritage Run is one
of the most popular and longest surviving events of its kind in the
area. This tradition of success is due in part to Gerrie’s dedication
and leadership. She lends her expertise to several other runs in town,
one of the original members of the Rockford Road Runners. She admits her
most outstanding achievement is raising her two daughters. Both have
gone on to professional careers and she helps them attain their goals as
they participate in marathons and ultramarathons (24 hour events).
