The Young Women's Christian Association of the United States
of America is a women's membership movement, nourished by it's
roots in the Christian faith and sustained by the richness of
many beliefs and values. Strengthened by diversity, the
Association draws together members who strive to create
opportunities for women's growth, leadership, and power in
order to attain a common vision: peace, justice, freedom, and
dignity for all people. The Association will thrust its collective
power towards the elimination of racism wherever it exists and by
any means necessary. |

The YWCA of Rockford
has a strong, proud history and rich tradition of providing 117 years of
progressive services to women and their families in the Rockford
community. In 1891, a time when women were considered too frail to
participate in athletics, the YWCA offered the first "physical culture"
class for women at Rockford College, at that time a Women's Seminary.
The YWCA built a residence facility for women when they needed to move
to the city to work in the factories while men were at war. The YWCA
also responded to the need for women to have a safe, recreational outlet
when the doors were not open to them at other facilities reserved for
men. Since 1891, the YWCA of Rockford has provided opportunities in the
areas of personal, economic, social and physical development that lead
to self sufficiency for women and families. |
