Single Parent Support Program
The Single Parent Support Program was created to support single parents
from Winnebago County and help them to obtain economic self-sufficiency.
The YWCA, in collaboration with Prairie State Legal Services, provides
assistance to single parents who have full custody of one or more
children.
An attorney from Prairie State Legal Services represents, at no cost,
low-income clients in child support collection cases. The YWCA’s Single
Parent Advocate provides social support, information, and referrals
addressing various issues affecting the lives of single parents. The
participants also receive assistance with other needs they may have.
Participants referred to the Single Parent Advocate may come with a
specific need, but through the interview process, other needs are
discovered. The Single Parent Advocate provides advice and guidance to
overcome these issues and needs.
Single parents are referred to us from different agencies in the
community, including public and social service agencies, medical and
educational institutions, and attorneys. They also find us through other
participants, relatives and friends, flyers, the phone book, and by word
of mouth.
Another component of the program allows us to provide additional help to
our growing Hispanic population. The Single Parent Advocate provides
translation services for our clients and translation and interpretation
services for others who may need this type of help.
The Single Parent Advocate also collaborates with the Department of Human
Services to administer the Front Door Grant, which helps clients sustain
economic self-sufficiency. This grant helps qualified clients with
one-time assistance with problems such as car repairs, uniforms, work
shoes, tools, and other things that will allow clients to maintain or find
employment.
